Microprocessing utilizing lasers and liquids: fast, precise and versatile

Material processing with ultrashort laser pulses is currently one of the most innovative production and manufacturing processes, and allows high-precision cutting, drilling and structuring of a wide variety of materials.

We aim to expand the application potential of ultrashort pulse laser processing through an innovation:

We efficiently use liquids in the laser processing zone, which greatly cools the workpiece and removes ablation products such as particles. As a result, the processing speed can be increased whilst maintaining high precision and achieving significantly cleaner surfaces.

Using our years of experience in the field of micromachining with ultrashort pulse lasers in liquids, we are currently working on building a robust industrial laser system. The implementation of this project is supported by the funding of the „EXIST-Forschungstransfer“ (BMWi).

Comparison of the state of the art with our method

The schematic illustrations show the differences between ultrashort pulse machining in liquids and conventional machining in a gas environment. At high power and very short repetition rates, the following evidenced phenomena can be observed:

Advantages

Fast, clean, functional and safe - the advantages are obvious

The use of liquid has four decisive advantages compared to processing in gas atmospheres, so that it can be used for multifunctional purposes.

  • Kühlmedium - schnell

    Cooling

    The heat transfer from the workpiece to the liquid is much greater than with gases. Higher repetition rates and pulse energies can be used for machining, therefore allowing a high process speed.

  • Spülmedium - sauber

    Rinsing

    Removed micro- and nanoparticles are carried away by the liquid and therefore cannot attach to the surface. In addition, adhesion forces are reduced and the removal of contamination is simplified.

  • Prozessmedium - funktional

    Process

    Physicochemical interactions between the material, the laser beam and the liquid can be used to functionalize the sample surface (e.g. making it hydrophobic).

  • Sicherheitsmedium - sicher

    Safety

    In addition to the effective binding of nano- and microparticles, liquids absorb soft X-rays much more effectively than air. The liquid thus serves as an additional safety feature for the health of the user.

Awards and Successes

LIDROTEC awarded as best technology start-up

Our innovative technology of laser processing in liquids and the corresponding business plan were awarded at the Bochum start-up competition "Senkrechtstarter". As the best technology start-up, we were able to secure 2nd place. More information: Business plan competition Senkrechtstarter

 

1st High Tech NRW Platzierung

LIDROTEC takes part in Start-up Business Accelerator HIGH-TECH.NRW

We successfully qualified for participation in the Start-up Business Accelerator for hardware-based key technologies in North Rhine-Westphalia and secured 1st place at Demo Day.
